Statement on Mayor Becker’s Public Safety Bond Proposal Recommendation
SALT LAKE CITY- (July 2, 2009)Business leaders commend Mayor Becker for recommending a scaled-back bond proposal to address urgent Salt Lake City public safety needs. Our review of the conceptual cost estimates shows that Salt Lake City taxpayers will save $5 million to $10 million if the state of Utah co-locates their emergency operations center with the capital city. A joint facility will also better serve the needs of both jurisdictions. We urge Salt Lake City and the state of Utah to work collaboratively to reach an agreement before the November election on a plan for a joint emergency operations center. Such a facility will best serve the emergency needs of the capital city and the state and will be the wisest use of taxpayer dollars.
