The corner office has been cleared out, the keys handed over and today there is a new person at the helm of this 131-year-old organization. Today, Derek Miller takes over as president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber and Downtown Alliance.
Many of you know Derek very well. He has not only been a member of the Salt Lake Chamber’s Executive Board for the last four years, but he is also the president and CEO of the World Trade Center Utah—the strategic partner and international arm of the Salt Lake Chamber. Under Derek’s leadership, WTC Utah has seen phenomenal growth with dozens of companies joining the organization and hundreds more learning how to expand their business overseas. In this role, we have witnessed Derek’s ability to advocate for free enterprise, expand Utah’s role in the global marketplace and help create a more prosperous economy.
Derek has led trade missions to London, Singapore, Vietnam, Jordan, and Israel and joined the Chamber during our recent trip to Cuba. Derek, and WTC Utah, also joined the Salt Lake Chamber and other economic partners to help elevate Utah’s rural communities and economies through the 25K Jobs Tour. Derek and his team helped lead the efforts to meet Governor Herbert’s goal of 25,000 jobs in all of Utah’s 25 counties off the Wasatch Front by 2020.
Working with rural communities is nothing new to Derek. In 2008, as the deputy director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development he oversaw the Rural Development Office, the International Trade and Diplomacy Office and the Corporate Recruitment Team. From there, he served as Chief of Staff to Governor Gary Herbert, where he oversaw the governor’s office and state operations, before becoming president and CEO of World Trade Center Utah.
His accomplishments are many and his dedication to the economic prosperity of this state is unparalleled. He is a leader with a proven track record and someone who understands the needs of our business community. I could think of no one better to take my place than Derek Miller. I have full confidence that under his direction the Salt Lake Chamber and Downtown Alliance will soar to new heights.
