This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Jim Swayze is an executive with Cambia Health Solutions, which recently donated $7.1 million to improve mental health in rural Utah. He’s here to tell us how this significant investment will help to address unmet needs.

JIM SWAYZE

Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah is one of Cambia’s regional health plans. As an insurance company, we’re concerned about the behavioral and mental health issues that have been greatly intensified by COVID-19. Rural communities where it can be difficult to get mental healthcare are especially impacted. This is why we invested $7.1 million to increase access where it’s most needed. This funding will support the development or expansion of programs and services that will provide 24/7 support to people in crisis or emotional distress. It will also increase the capacity of established safety net programs to meet current and emerging needs.

To make the greatest impact in rural areas, we have invested in community partners with differing behavioral and mental health services. With our financial support, these organizations will advance important programs to help Utahns this year and into the future:

  • Association for Utah Community Health
  • National Children’s Alliance (NCA): Utah’s Children Justice Centers
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) – Utah
  • University of Utah Huntsman Mental Health Institute
  • Utah Office of Multicultural Affairs
