This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business.

Utah is blessed with some of the finest universities in America. During the coronavirus, they are adapting, innovating, and overcoming challenges not only to provide for our students today but to prepare us for the future. Here’s President Brad Mortensen to tell us what Weber State University is doing.

BRAD MORTENSEN

With 25% growth in our online courses over the last five years, many of Weber State University’s faculty and staff were prepared to rapidly develop online content — not only for the last six weeks of Spring, but also for an online summer semester. Thanks to their efforts, we now have more students enrolled in summer courses at Weber State than any time in our history. Weber State is uniquely positioned to help lead Utah out of this economic downturn. As people realize it’s an important time to upskill, retool, or complete a degree, Weber State’s model of providing stackable credentials that build upon each other — from certificates to associates, bachelors, and graduate degrees — provides an efficient way to prepare Utah’s workforce for a variety of opportunities in high demand fields.

Working together, Utah is not only overcoming the coronavirus, we are laying the foundation for a bright future. Fundamental to the success we will enjoy is leadership in education — the innovation from forward-thinking schools like Weber State University. I’m Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, and this is Speaking in Business.
