This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Dr. Amy Khan is the executive medical director at Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah. Today’s she’s here to talk about flu shots and why it is especially important to get one this year.
AMY KHAN
COVID-19 cases have recently spiked right as we are heading into flu season. If more Utahns get a flu shot this year than in the past, we will 1) reduce the risk that people will get COVID-19 and the flu at the same time or within a short timeframe, and 2) decrease acute flu cases that could potentially overwhelm our healthcare system, which is already challenged by people needing COVID-19 testing or treatment.
Studies show that a flu shot offers the best protection against getting the flu and is recommended for all persons over 6 months old. It won’t protect against COVID-19, but will reduce illness, hospitalizations and deaths from the flu. Now is the best time to get vaccinated to decrease your risk through the fall and winter. Flu shots are covered at no cost through health plans and at local health departments at low- or no-cost for Utahns without insurance.
