Did you know this is the time of year when The Road Home gets most of its financial contributions and in-kind donations?

The holiday season is an important time for charitable organizations, as they see a large increase in volunteering and donations – which are crucial to the success throughout the entire year.

There are several volunteer opportunities available this holiday season, and The Road Home is one that needs some holiday help!

You can volunteer for the Candy Cane Corner – A holiday store where donated new, unwrapped items are available for parents in need to shop for their children for the holidays.

Or volunteer for The Road Home’s Holiday Media-Thon where our local radio stations broadcast live from the shelter for two days to raise money and awareness of the Road Home.

Both are wonderful ways to get involved, spread a little holiday cheer and help make a difference this holiday season.

Take control of your energy costs by adding energy-saving sensors to lighting systems. This makes saving energy easy and consistent, day after day — so you don’t have to think about it.

For example, when used in refrigerated cases, controls illuminate the products as the customer approaches, then turn off or dim when no one is near.

You can apply this technology outdoors too. LED fixtures with occupancy controls allow lights to dim when activity is low.

When sensors detect motion, the exterior lighting brightens instantly. This trigger alerts occupants or cameras of nearby activity.

Rocky Mountain Power’s wattsmart Business program provides incentives for these types lighting controls.

Since pre-approval is required for lighting projects, contact Rocky Mountain Power at

Good news for all you skiers, snowboarders, and winter sports loving aficionados: UTA’s new and improved Ski Bus service just started a few weekends ago.

The newly configured service increases the number of bus trips up the Cottonwood Canyons by 35% and provides service all day with peak time pickups every 15 minutes.

Last year, UTA began working with ski resorts, community partners and riders to fix the continuous traffic and congestion problem that has plagued the Cottonwood Canyons for years.

Public hearings were held and online comments were received from a lot of different people.

Service now connects the ski bus to the FrontRunner and TRAX, and has increased the frequency of its busses during peak times.

The best part? For season pass holders the ski bus is free.

Remember the UTA Ski Bus in Cottonwood Canyons will run on weekends only – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. With full daily service on December 18th.

A recent report from WalletHub share’s something all Utahns inherently know – how to keep the spirit of giving alive all year long.

Utah was ranked the most charitable state in the nation!

We are followed by Minnesota, North Dakota, Maryland and Oklahoma who also made the top 5.

To determine the most generous states WalletHub looked at 13 key metrics that include volunteer rate, percentage of income donated, and percentage of sheltered homeless.

The Beehive State ranked number one in volunteer rate, donated income, population who have claimed to have donated their time, and the number of volunteer hours per capita.

Utah also ranked number four in percent of population who donated money and number two for volunteer retention rate.

I am proud to come from a state of such enthusiastic and giving individuals.
