The quickest way to safely get through this pandemic and get back to business is to get everyone to mask up, practice social distancing, and wash hands.

We have seen a troubling surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Utah in recent weeks. One hundred seventy-six fellow Utahns have died as of July 2, and many more may follow unless we act to enforce evidence-based precautions. We do not want to reach a potential situation wherein our health care systems are overwhelmed with increasing COVID-19 cases and tough care decisions may need to occur. Utahns can stop the upward surge of cases by taking a few simple and practical actions. To protect public health, keep businesses open, and allow more freedom for all, we need to mask up, socially distance, and wash hands.

All Utah businesses need to band together to get this done. We have heard from many companies that to enforce wearing masks in their establishments, they need a mandate from the Governor. A gubernatorial order will also help businesses protect their employees, vendors, and customers from the spread of COVID-19 within their company. The simplest and least intrusive way to keep people safe is to require that customers wear masks in businesses, wash their hands, and practice social distancing.

We are learning more about this virus daily. We may not have all the answers, but we do know this triple prong approach will save lives and keep the economy open.

Between the extremes of doing nothing and the enforcement of a stay-at-home order, there is a sweet spot. If people will cooperate and act smart, we can get through this together without irreparably harming our economy, and without overwhelming our healthcare system or losing more lives.

Wearing masks is not an issue of restricting freedoms. Uniting together in mask-wearing is how Utahns can continue their legacy of looking out for each other. Please join us in asking Governor Herbert to mandate masks in businesses so that our companies don’t have to pressure customers without backup.

Stay Healthy to Stay Open. Mask Up Utah.
