To provide our members a voice on the federal level, the Salt Lake Chamber annually leads a delegation to Washington, D.C. This year, our trip will take place from September 19-22.
By bringing Utah’s business leaders together with members of our federal delegation, in addition to other policy and business groups headquartered in the nation’s capital, the trip has proven to be an important opportunity that is educational and significant.
Never before has the federal delegation from Utah enjoyed such a prominent leadership role in Congress. Furthermore, the Utah delegation has perhaps more collective influence than any other state delegation in Congress due to the number of committees chaired by Utah legislators.
In the upper chamber Senator Orrin Hatch is President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate being the senior most sitting senator in the majority party. As President pro tempore he is third in line of succession to the Presidency. Senator Hatch is also Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, the most powerful committee in the U.S. Senate. Utah’s junior Senator Mike Lee, is Chairman of the Republican Steering Committee which influences the party’s policy priorities and legislative agenda.
In the House of Representatives a pair of Chairmanships is held by Utah Congressmen. Congressman Rob Bishop is Chairman of the Key House Natural Resources Committee. Many important issues facing Utah and members of the Chamber, ranging from water and energy to natural resources and land management fall under the jurisdiction of Chairman Bishop’s Committee. Another important committee, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is chaired by fellow Utahn, Congressman Jason Chaffetz.
In an election year as unique as this one, our nation’s capital will be vibrant and active. The opportunity to meet and discuss the unique challenges facing Utah business will help provide counsel and direction to our federal delegation and other policy and business groups in Washington.
In addition to our state’s federal delegation, this year’s lineup also includes, guest speaker Tom Donahue, President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
We look forward to helping establish a greater national voice for Utah business.
