From Basement Beginnings to High-Tech Craft at Benson’s Trophies & Plaques

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Data Center, small businesses make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses, employing nearly 46% of Americans. Utah continues to stand out for its pro-business climate, supported by strong initiatives and resources that help entrepreneurs start and grow. Each month, the Salt Lake Chamber will highlight a small business in Utah to showcase its economic impact and encourage community support.

Benson’s Trophies & Plaques is the epitome of the American Dream and of a true small business success story. Family-owned and operated, the store is known for its personalized customer service and dedication to quality.

What started in a basement has grown into a respected company creating trophies and awards for customers across the region using the industry’s most advanced engraving equipment and techniques.

Owner Craig Benson’s late father, John Benson, founded the business in the early 1970s under the name “The Trophy Hut,” later renaming it Benson’s Trophies & Plaques. Craig has been part of the business for 55 years and still remembers building his very first trophy alongside his dad at just eight years old.

Today, Craig continues his father’s legacy with the help of his right-hand team member, Dalyce. Together, they design, engrave, build, repair and customize a wide range of recognition awards and trophies.

“It’s so much fun working here,” Craig said. “Being able to create things with my own hands, put them together and even see some of our work on TV — it’s really special. I consider myself an artist, and I get to use my creativity every day. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how much people appreciate the work we do.”

Over the years, the company has contributed to major projects, including the 2025 Formula One trophy, awards honoring Utah community leaders, Emmy awards for advertising, well-known sports trophies and more.

Reflecting on his father, Craig shared, “I feel incredibly lucky because I get to hear people talk about my dad every day when they come into the store. They share their stories with me, and that’s something really special.”
