This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. African Americans have lived, worked, and worshiped in Utah since before the pioneers arrived in 1847. Now a new book, published by Utah’s Black Chamber of Commerce, tells some of those amazing stories. James Jackson III, the founder of the Utah Black Chamber, has more.

The Utah Black Chamber is excited to announce our new book, Black Utah: Stories From a Thriving Community. It highlights the stories and experiences of the Black community living in Utah. You’ll hear from dozens of individuals with diverse backgrounds sharing why Utah is a community for them and how they are thriving.

While Utah’s Black community is still small, it is strong and growing every year. There is still much work to be done, but we want our brothers and sisters to know there is a place for you in this community. This is a collaborative, creative, and thriving place made of people who are ready and able to change the world.

Black Utah: Stories From a Thriving Community is available through Amazon, as well as Salt & Honey – inside the Salt Palace Convention Center – and at the Leonardo Museum, with more retailers coming soon. Buy your copy today!

According to the U.S. Census, Utah is home to some 50,000 African Americans – 17 percent coming as immigrants from other nations – and all part of our state’s rich fabric and history. I’m Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business.
