As a program of the Salt Lake Chamber Foundation, Utah Community Builders spotlights one organization each month that’s making a meaningful difference in the community. The initiative supports the Foundation’s mission to engage Utah’s business community in addressing key issues that strengthen the state’s workforce.
Since its founding in 1894, Neighborhood House has provided essential resources and support to families in Salt Lake City.
The organization was created after its founder recognized the disparity between children who had access to opportunities and those who did not. Determined to help level the playing field, she brought together a group of women committed to making a difference — and Neighborhood House was born.
What began as a one-room schoolhouse has grown into a multi-site nonprofit organization serving children, aging adults and individuals with disabilities throughout the community.
Executive Director Jennifer Nuttall shared her personal connection to Neighborhood House, which started 19 years ago when she was searching for a high-quality youth program she could trust for her own family.
“I’ll never forget the feeling of walking through those doors,” Nuttall shared. “It felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders because you could immediately tell it was a high-quality program. The kids were happy, the people truly cared about my situation and they quickly connected me with the sliding fee scale they’re known for. I feel privileged to now be a part of it.”
Today, Neighborhood House offers a variety of programs and services, including its Children’s Development Center, Adult Day Services and Family Support Center. Through partnerships with local organizations, it also provides mental health services, a food pantry, sensory room, cyber center, enrichment activities and free thrift store.
One unique aspect of Neighborhood House is the connection between generations through shared activities involving both children and adults.
Nuttall explained, “They do gardening cooking, music and social activities together. For the adults, it’s amazing to have those young, lively kids around. And for the kids, it helps them become comfortable interacting with aging adults and those with different disabilities.”
“I love that Neighborhood House really focuses on the specific needs of working parents. We work hard to make our programs affordable while still providing high-quality care and support for both children and adults.”
