Wasatch Adaptive Sports (WAS) is once again excited to host the Subaru Athlete Challenge as part of the 38th annual HGGC Steve Young Ski Classic on Saturday, March 9 at 11:15 a.m. at Snowbird Resort.

The Subaru Athlete Challenge is a fun and friendly downhill ski race held in Snowbird’s Chickadee area for athletes of all abilities that includes WAS student skiers with disabilities, Pro Football Hall of Fame Quarterback Steve Young, professional athletes, mascots and princesses, and other special guests. The event has been a staple of the HGGC Steve Young Ski Classic for 38 years, and features an inviting and inclusive atmosphere of friendly competition.

A video recap that captures the essence of last year’s event can be found at this link.

“Getting outdoors at Snowbird and skiing alongside Wasatch Adaptive Sports students and instructors at the Subaru Athlete Challenge is always such a fun and engaging experience” says Young. “Seeing the joy on the faces of everyone involved, and the progress and confidence that the students gain each year is why Rich Lawson, myself and our team at HGGC are passionate supporters of expanding access to outdoor physical recreation and friendly competition for everyone who wishes to participate in open air sports.”

“The Subaru Athlete Challenge is a wonderful celebration of our students in this program, as well as our long-time support from Steve Young, Snowbird, Subaru and the many partners and sponsors that make our work possible” says WAS Executive Director Elizabeth Kimball. “Many of our students and families come to us not knowing that adaptive skiing was even available to them, whether that is because of financial barriers or prior knowledge of the existence of adaptive programs like WAS. To see these students shredding down the mountain alongside Steve Young, competing and cultivating their independence and confidence, it’s really what our organization is all about.”

Anyone who wishes to support the event can do so through its annual online auctions, which opened on March 4 and continue through Saturday, March 9. Visit sysc2024.givesmart.com.
