Ensign College, a leader in career-focused education within the Church Educational System, is excited to announce a transformative shift to a 7-week block academic calendar. This new structure will replace the traditional 14-week semester format, offering students more opportunities for flexibility and success.
Schekina Boumba, an Ensign College digital marketing student, has been participating in the advance pilot and is taking only block classes. When reflecting on the workload she said, “This is actually better than semesters because I only have two classes. I don’t have to worry about competing assignments from four or five different classes.”
Research shows that students perform better in shorter academic terms, as they can focus on fewer courses at a time, leading to less burnout and higher completion rates. Over the past two years, Ensign College transitioned to a 7-week block format for all the online courses it offers through its relationship with BYU-Pathway Worldwide. Ensign’s Salt Lake City campus will now adopt the same format. Courses were redesigned and piloted for 7-week blocks, ensuring Ensign College’s unique applied curriculum and student-centric model remain at the heart of the learning experience.
“Our transition to a 7-week block schedule is rooted in our mission to develop capable and trusted disciples of Jesus Christ,” said President Bruce C. Kusch. “We believe this change will bless our students and provide them with an even greater ability to balance their education, work, and personal responsibilities. At the end of the day, it is all about helping students achieve, succeed and graduate.”
This shift brings multiple benefits, including:
- Enhanced Learning: Focused, immersive coursework leads to deeper understanding and improved academic performance.
- Increased Flexibility: More frequent start dates allow students to begin or return to college sooner, making college more accessible than ever.
- Higher Completion Rates: The format helps students stay on track toward graduation.
“This academic structure has been shown to improve student outcomes and achievement,” said Denice Lingen, Dean of General Studies. “The ability to focus on two or three classes at a time, rather than juggling four or five, allows students to dive deeper into their studies. And the flexibility of six starting points throughout the year helps students integrate college with family and other commitments.”
Ensign College will officially make the transition to 7-week blocks beginning in early May. Prospective students are encouraged to visit ensign.edu to learn more about this innovative approach and explore the academic programs available.
