As a nonprofit and program of the Salt Lake Chamber Foundation, Utah Community Builders recognizes an organization each month that is making a meaningful impact in the community. This initiative aligns with their mission to activate the Utah business community to address pressing community issues that strengthen Utah’s workforce.
Working hand in hand with school districts and volunteers, Friends for Sight has been making a difference since 1955. Founded by a group of local women passionate about identifying blindness in children, the organization now conducts about 65,000 vision screenings each year across Utah schools. They have also expanded their reach by opening a vision clinic in partnership with the Salt Lake City School District.
Executive Director Jamie Justice explained, “For individuals with significant eye health concerns, our clinics provide the specialized care they need. Through multiple pop-up clinics equipped with mobile technology, we offer comprehensive refractions and eye health screenings. These services give us valuable insight into their vision needs and allow us to provide prescription glasses when necessary.”
Justice shared that one of the most rewarding moments is hearing from parents and teachers about the change in a student’s life. “Often, a child who is struggling in school may become disengaged, act out or take on the role of the class clown. Once their vision is corrected, they re-engage in learning, their confidence grows and they make social and emotional progress. Something as simple as a pair of glasses can make a profound difference.”
Friends for Sight continues to raise awareness of the need for accessible vision care. Justice noted, “Every student in Utah receives a vision screening, yet about 70% of those who fail are not getting the follow-up care they need. That’s roughly 27,000 children each year who are struggling with their vision, and some may have undiagnosed vision disorders.”
Friends for Sight’s work continues to change lives across Utah, ensuring children have the vision care they need to succeed. Through screenings, clinics and community partnerships, they’re creating brighter futures one pair of glasses at a time.
