Helping Women Grow Their Careers with BookSmarts Accounting

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Data Center, small businesses make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses, employing nearly 46% of Americans. Utah continues to stand out for its pro-business climate, supported by strong initiatives and resources that help entrepreneurs start and grow. Each month, the Salt Lake Chamber will highlight a small business in Utah to showcase its economic impact and encourage community support.

Since 2008, BookSmarts Accounting has provided full-service financial support for businesses — handling everything from bookkeeping and payroll to cash flow management, financial reporting and strategic guidance. The company also creates remote job opportunities that allow women across Utah to stay in the workforce while working from home.

CEO and Founder Jenny Groberg says the idea for the company came from personal experience. “I created BookSmarts Accounting out of necessity,” Groberg shared.

While raising her family and supporting her husband through medical school, she needed a way to contribute financially while still being present at home with her children. That experience inspired her to build a business centered on flexible, remote work while delivering exceptional accounting and bookkeeping services.

“My goal is to create remote opportunities that allow people to work from home,” Groberg said. “At the same time, we’re committed to delivering excellent accounting services.”

The company’s impact now extends beyond Utah through its partnership with BYU-Pathway Worldwide, where the BookSmarts team helps teach accounting courses to students around the world.

“Our team teaches an accounting internship, helping students learn accounting fundamentals, process transactions and work with different software,” Groberg explained. “We also have teaching assistants who help grade assignments and support students along the way.”

From the first cohort of students, BookSmarts hired four graduates to join the team. “They’ve been great additions to our team, and we’re excited to continue this program,” she said.

“Our team keeps improving the onboarding and training process so new hires can hit the ground running. It’s really cool to see people with different skills come together and collaborate.”

For Groberg, growing the business is also about helping other women succeed. She said, “A big motivator for me is trying to be a mentor because I didn’t have someone to guide me through this business journey. My hope is to help women develop skills, get back into the workforce and build the confidence that they can do it.”
