President’s Message: Celebrating Women’s Impact on Utah’s Economy

As we recognize Women’s History Month, we have the opportunity to reflect on the immense contributions women have made — and continue to make — to Utah’s economy. From the early days of our state’s settlement to today’s thriving business landscape, women have been innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders who shape our communities and industries.

Utah has long been a place where women fight for opportunities in business and leadership. In 1870, Utah made history as the first place in the modern United States where women cast a ballot, demonstrating the state’s early commitment to empowering women’s voices. That legacy of leadership continues today, with women driving economic growth and innovation across the state. Pioneering leaders like Alice Merrill Horne, who helped establish Utah’s arts and creative economy, and Reva Beck Bosone, the first woman elected to Congress from Utah, set the stage for generations of women who continue to break barriers. More recently, leaders like Gail Miller, chair of the Larry H. Miller Company, and Patricia Jones, CEO of the Women’s Leadership Institute and former legislator, have demonstrated the immense impact women have on shaping Utah’s economic landscape.

Utah’s collaborative business community also fosters strong networks that empower women to succeed in leadership roles. Beyond business ownership, Utah companies are increasingly prioritizing workplace flexibility, family-friendly policies and leadership development programs to support women’s career advancement while respecting a variety of lifestyles. These efforts, along with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a culture of innovation, position Utah as a leader in championing women in the workforce.

Yet, while progress has been made, there is still work to be done to ensure that women have opportunities to lead and succeed. Increasing support and access to resources, addressing the gender pay gap and dismantling gender discrimination are all things our business community can do to promote even greater success. The Salt Lake Chamber remains committed to fostering an environment where women in business have access to the resources, mentorship and policies that empower them to thrive. Through initiatives like our annual Women & Business Conference and ATHENA Awards Luncheon, we continue to champion efforts that support women’s advancement in the workplace and beyond.

As we look to the future, we encourage business leaders to recognize and invest in the women who drive success in their organizations. Throughout the month, the Salt Lake Chamber will share the stories of several remarkable women that are making a difference in our local community. These leaders exemplify the spirit of innovation and commitment that drives Utah’s economic growth.

By recognizing and investing in women, creating welcoming workplaces, supporting leadership development and fostering entrepreneurship, we can strengthen our economy and create a more vibrant and innovative Utah.

This Women’s History Month and every month, let’s celebrate the achievements of the past while actively shaping a future where every woman in Utah has the opportunity to contribute, lead and succeed.
