President’s Message: Cultivating Community by Shopping Local

Summer brings a new sense of community to Utah. With warmer weather and longer days, friends, family and neighbors can more easily enjoy all that Salt Lake City has to offer. One beloved summer tradition is the Downtown Farmers Market at Pioneer Park. The market happens every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June through October and has been a vital part of our community for over 30 years.

The mission of the market is to support sustainable, regional agriculture, to build community gathering places, to increase access to nutritious, local foods in urban areas, and to educate the consumer about shopping local.

With locally sourced food and beverages, fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, delicious baked goods and more, customers can get a real taste of high-quality food from vendors across the state. Every year, the Market showcases the best of what our region has to offer. However, if culinary fare doesn’t pique your interest, a collection of unique, handmade arts and crafts are available as well.

One of the most direct economic benefits of the market is the support it provides to local farmers and producers. It is an outlet for them to sell their products, retain a larger share of the profits and ensure affordable, fresh produce for consumers.

Moreover, the market is a significant driver of traffic and visitation to downtown Salt Lake City. Each Saturday, it attracts thousands of visitors from within and outside our city, increasing foot traffic for nearby businesses. Restaurants, retail shops and services all benefit from this ripple effect, which in turn enhances the entire downtown area.

Beyond its economic impact, the Downtown Farmers Market serves as an important community gathering space, fostering social interactions and helping to build a sense of belonging and community pride. When you purchase from local vendors, you are investing in the livelihoods of your neighbors and strengthening community bonds. Hope to see you there!
