According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses. What’s more, Utah has been credited as the most pro-small business state in America, thanks to our state’s pro-business initiatives and support systems. Each month, the Salt Lake Chamber will highlight a small business in Utah to emphasize its importance in our economy and encourage local support.
Mother-son duo Denise Hintzke and Cian Earls recently brought School of Rock to Salt Lake City, opening a new location in Trolley Square. With Cian’s passion for music and Denise’s commitment to making a difference in children’s lives, the two make a dynamic and purpose-driven team.
School of Rock was originally founded in 1996 by a music instructor who discovered that students progressed more quickly when they practiced and performed together in groups. What began as a simple idea has grown into a global movement, with over 350 schools operating across 15 countries. Today, School of Rock is recognized as a leader in performance-based music education.
“We provide students with a safe, nurturing environment where they can grow through music,” Hintzke explained. “Research shows that children with a music background often perform better academically. Being part of a band or ensemble creates a team dynamic — much like sports — that encourages healthy competition and inspires students to push themselves and improve.”
As part of the Youth Enrichment Brands family, School of Rock offers far more than traditional music lessons. In addition to one-on-one instruction, students participate in themed camps during the summer and school breaks. What truly sets School of Rock apart is its emphasis on performance. “Our students don’t just learn to play music — they learn to perform it,” Hintzke explained. “Our curriculum blends private lessons, group rehearsals and live shows, covering everything from guitar and bass to drums, keyboard and vocals.”
Reflecting on their journey as new business owners, Hintzke shared, “One of the first things I told my son when starting our business was to join the Salt Lake Chamber. It’s a great way to build credibility, connect with other professionals and access valuable resources.”
School of Rock Salt Lake is more than just music lessons — it’s a place for students to grow, gain confidence and connect through performance.
