State of Good: Empowering Utah Communities Through Suicide Prevention and Support

As a nonprofit and program of the Salt Lake Chamber Foundation, Utah Community Builders recognizes an organization each month that is making a meaningful impact in the community. This initiative aligns with their mission to activate the Utah business community to address pressing community issues that strengthen Utah’s workforce.

Recognized as a serious public health concern in Utah, suicide has driven the Utah Suicide Prevention Committee and Coalition to take meaningful action in the effort to save lives. Established in 2012 by a group of dedicated individuals passionate about preventing suicide, the coalition has since grown significantly and now operates under the Behavioral Health Commission, working tirelessly to provide resources, education and support across the state.

Co-Chair of the Utah Suicide Prevention Coalition, Benée Larsen states, “The growth of the coalition shows the incredible value of our group and the work we do in suicide prevention, not only by saving lives but by reshaping the conversation around it. The Suicide Prevention Coalition is driven by a dedicated group of passionate individuals committed to making a lasting impact.”

The coalition plays a crucial role in supporting the community through crisis services, education and targeted resources. “Education is key — we know that the more people learn about suicide prevention, the more lives we can save,” Larsen emphasizes. The coalition offers immediate help through the Utah Crisis Line and SafeUT app, provides Gatekeeper Training to equip individuals with prevention skills and offers postvention support for those affected by suicide.

Recognizing that suicide prevention is not one-size-fits-all, the coalition has developed specialized programs tailored to faith groups, LGBTQ+ individuals, youth and workplaces, ensuring that diverse communities receive the resources they need. Through regular meetings, workgroups and collaborative partnerships, they are building a foundation for long-term prevention efforts, fostering a more informed, compassionate and proactive approach to suicide prevention.
