As a program of the Salt Lake Chamber Foundation, Utah Community Builders recognizes an organization each month that is making a meaningful impact in the community. This initiative aligns with their mission to activate the Utah business community to address pressing community issues that strengthen Utah’s workforce.
With a history dating back to the 1940s, Habitat for Humanity has been serving communities with one simple belief: every person deserves a safe, decent and affordable place to live, regardless of their background, race or religion.
Through building new homes, repairing existing ones and offering programs that provide vital resources and support, Habitat for Humanity helps families achieve stability and independence. What began as a small grassroots effort has grown into a global movement, now operating in more than 70 countries with initiatives such as new home construction and critical home repairs, along with ReStores that sell donated goods to help fund the mission. Together, these efforts bring people together to build stronger, more vibrant communities.
Greater Salt Lake Area CEO Carin Crowe addressed some common misconceptions, explaining, “The families we serve are often the everyday workers who make our communities function — teachers, service workers, firefighters and police officers. These are hardworking people, and every family pays an affordable mortgage, calculated to ensure it’s manageable, with 0% interest.”
She continued, “Habitat for Humanity is all about neighbors coming together to build something bigger than themselves. That spirit is at the heart of every piece of furniture we sell, every nail we hammer and every key we hand to a new homeowner.”
For Crowe, Habitat for Humanity’s mission extends beyond the houses, stating that, “It’s about people finding hope. It’s about parents tucking their kids into safe bedrooms at night. At its core, it’s about community and care.”
Still, this work depends on collective effort. Crowe emphasized the importance of local support, saying, “It’s vital to have businesses, community organizations and faith groups join us. Whether it’s sponsoring a build day, partnering on a project or volunteering, together we can create lasting change in our state.”
