As a program of the Salt Lake Chamber Foundation, Utah Community Builders recognizes an organization each month that is making a meaningful impact in the community. This initiative aligns with their mission to activate the Utah business community to address pressing community issues that strengthen Utah’s workforce.
Alliance House is making a big impact in Utah by redefining what mental health support looks like. More than just a nonprofit in Salt Lake City, it’s a thriving community where purpose, connection and dignity come first.
The organization follows the clubhouse model of rehabilitation, a framework that began in New York City in the 1940s. Alliance House was established in Utah in 1987 when three families, searching for opportunities for their children living with mental illness, decided to bring the model here. Today, its influence extends far beyond the state. “Now clubhouses from around the world travel to Utah for training so they can take what they’ve learned here back to their communities,” said Executive Director Paige Huff.
Huff sums up the philosophy simply: “When you come to Alliance House, leave your diagnosis at the door.” Instead, members are encouraged to focus on their strengths and abilities, as well as building meaningful connections.
A unique aspect of Alliance House is its members actively participate in running the organization. “They come in voluntarily, as much or as little as they want, and contribute to everything from finances and fundraising to grant writing, the website and social media,” Huff explained. “We believe our members are capable, and we hold high expectations for them.”
For those involved, the impact is personal. Margaret, a member, shared: “As someone who suffers from major depression and anxiety, I was looking for a place where I belong and where people are treated with dignity and respect. I love the relationships we have with the staff — we all work together, side by side.”
She added, “It’s really important to know you are not alone. There is a place for you to go. Every holiday, we make sure we are open and doing a fun activity, making sure people have a place to be.”
Businesses also play a key role in supporting Alliance House. “One of the biggest ways businesses can help is by offering transitional employment opportunities,” Huff said. “A lot of businesses are looking for employees, and we have many members eager to work. It’s a huge way to support our mission.”
