State of Good: Promise Partnership Utah’s Mission to Break the Cycle of Poverty

As a nonprofit and program of the Salt Lake Chamber Foundation, Utah Community Builders recognizes an organization each month that is making a meaningful impact in the community. This initiative aligns with their mission to activate the Utah business community to address pressing community issues that strengthen Utah’s workforce.

Promise Partnership Utah has been making a meaningful impact on students’ lives and creating real change for Utahns since its work began in 2005. By building partnerships across the private and public sectors, they support student success in Community Schools, Promise Communities and at the systems level.

Composed of hundreds of organizations, Promise Partnership Utah is committed to breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty, preparing Utah’s future workforce and strengthening families and communities. Their work centers on education and collaboration, driven by the 100% Promise — a commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunities and support needed to thrive in school, career and life, regardless of their background. “If you want to change big-picture outcomes, you have to work together differently and band together as a team rather than independently,” said Amy Ahrens Terpstra, Chief Impact Officer.

Promise Partnership Utah ensures students and families receive the support they need — both in and out of the classroom — so teachers can focus on teaching. “We build partnerships from the time a child is born until they enter college or trade school to launch a great career,” said Terpstra. “This community school model takes the pressure off schools by bringing in partners to create a clear pathway for success.” Currently, they collaborate with over 50 community schools as part of a statewide coalition.

Their work also includes early childhood and after-school initiatives. One example is a nine-week early childhood program for parents of children ages 0-3, teaching them how to foster brain development, support their child’s growth and engage in their learning.

Beyond direct programs, Promise Partnership Utah advocates for policies that drive long-term change. “Utah consistently ranks among the top states in the economy, poverty reduction and education, serving as a model for the nation. Promise Partnership Utah ensures we not only maintain our leadership in these areas but also truly live up to our potential as the best in the nation.”
