State of Good: TURN Community Services Turning Dreams Into Reality Across Utah

As a program of the Salt Lake Chamber Foundation, Utah Community Builders recognizes an organization each month that is making a meaningful impact in the community. This initiative aligns with their mission to activate the Utah business community to address pressing community issues that strengthen Utah’s workforce.

As Utah’s largest nonprofit disability provider, TURN Community Services has been making a profound impact for more than 50 years. They’ve reshaped the standards of disability care by offering a wide range of programs, including residential services, supported and pre-employment transitions, continuing education, summer camps, pageants and more. With five administrative offices across the state, TURN ensures its services, ranging from professional support to community events like holiday parties, are accessible statewide. Each year, they serve more than 500 individuals while working closely with the community to provide quality, personalized care.

Alyssa DeHart, TURN’s Director of Development and Communications, shared, The people we serve at TURN are filling critical roles in our communities. They bring refreshing perspectives and lift the mood at their places of work. Employers and volunteers find the association deeply rewarding.” She added, “When individuals receive the right support, trauma-informed care, proper diagnosis or ongoing services, they thrive as contributing members of society.”

DeHart also emphasized TURN’s mission and the importance of personal growth: “All of our individuals set goals. That’s why our mission is turning dreams into reality, because we teach, encourage and support them to hope, dream and make those dreams a reality.”

She further highlighted the power of collaboration, stating, “Nonprofits need to link arms, share resources, and drive the work forward together.” Through partnerships with organizations such as the National Ability Center, Utah Transit Authority and United Way, TURN has expanded its reach and impact across Utah. DeHart noted that membership with the Salt Lake Chamber has enhanced TURN’s ability to connect with leaders, build relationships and broaden its community impact.
