In today’s business landscape, environmental sustainability is a key driver of long-term success. Every other month, the Salt Lake Chamber will feature a Utah business making a positive impact on the environment and our natural resources, inspiring innovation and support across the community.
Our featured organization, GREENbike, is Utah’s nonprofit bike-share program offering a sustainable alternative to driving. We spoke with Marketing and Communications Manager Mackenzie Dodge to learn more about their ongoing sustainability efforts.
How does GREENbike contribute to lowering carbon emissions in Utah?
GREENbike contributes to lowering carbon emissions in Utah by encouraging people to choose biking over driving for short trips, which reduces vehicle use and associated greenhouse gas emissions in urban areas.
What impact has the bike share program had on reducing car trips and traffic congestion?
The bike share program has helped reduce car trips and traffic congestion by providing residents and visitors in Salt Lake City and Ogden with a convenient and affordable alternative to driving. By encouraging biking for short trips, the program decreases the number of cars on the road, helps ease congestion in busy areas and supports a more efficient transportation system.
Are there specific strategies or programs you use to encourage more sustainable transportation?
GREENbike uses several strategies to encourage more sustainable transportation, including partnerships with local companies to offer free or discounted passes. The program also collaborates with community events, such as Kilby Block Party and Living Traditions, by providing free promotional codes that allow attendees to travel by bike, reducing the need for parking and helping to ease traffic congestion.
What future initiatives are to promote sustainability?
Future sustainability initiatives include growing partnerships with community organizations and events to provide free or discounted access to bikes, making sustainable transportation more accessible. GREENbike also aims to further reduce its environmental impact by limiting vehicle use for operations and encouraging staff to use bikes, when possible, while continuing to support alternatives to driving across the city.
How does GREENbike fit into broader efforts to make Utah’s transportation system more environmentally friendly?
GREENbike plays an important role in Utah’s broader sustainability efforts by offering a reliable, environmentally friendly transportation option that has served communities for more than 13 years. In addition to reducing car trips for riders, GREENbike is working to lower its own operational emissions by having technicians use bikes instead of vans for maintenance when possible. Through partnerships with community organizations and free-ride programs, GREENbike further encourages residents and visitors to choose biking as a cleaner, healthier alternative to driving.
