According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses. What’s more, Utah has been credited as the most pro-small business state in America, thanks to our state’s pro-business initiatives and support systems. Each month, the Salt Lake Chamber will highlight a small business in Utah to emphasize its importance in our economy and encourage local support.
Go Pave Utah has been helping to solve infrastructure challenges for nearly 30 years. Its story begins with CEO Barney Boynton, who, after graduating high school in 1996, set out to fix problems wherever he could. What started with cleaning houses, windows and carpets soon expanded into patching potholes, and eventually grew into a trusted, long-standing business serving communities across Utah.
Today, Go Pave Utah specializes in repairing and maintaining infrastructure with services focused on roads, parking lots and utilities. Boynton explained, “We try to keep businesses and customers moving. Our crews work in a flexible manner to minimize disruptions, so businesses can stay open as we go. We aim to be a solution that works — not a painful one.”
What truly sets Go Pave Utah apart is its work culture. With 38 employees and a growing team, the company is built on strong relationships and a family-first mentality. “The families that are part of us are a big deal,” Boynton said. “That’s the fun part — we’ve built a culture that’s tight-knit, supportive and committed to growing together.”
Go Pave Utah’s commitment extends beyond infrastructure. The company actively invests in the community, having supported the Festival of Trees in partnership with the Children’s Justice Center for 15 years. They also host BBQs and community events throughout the year, creating opportunities for people to connect in meaningful and enjoyable ways.
For Boynton, small businesses like Go Pave Utah play an essential role in building trust and accountability. “Small businesses are where accountability lives,” he said. “When you call us, you’re not pushed through a corporate maze or automated system — you’re talking directly to people who take ownership of the outcome.”
As a proud member of the Salt Lake Chamber, Boynton values the connections and opportunities it brings. “The Chamber helps us engage with leaders, collaborate and see the bigger picture. It allows us to be part of something larger than ourselves,” he said.
