Four Questions With Sandi Hendry: Owner of Minky Couture

This holiday season, the Salt Lake Chamber will showcase local small businesses weekly. These businesses are integral to our community, and we encourage you to join us in celebrating and shopping small this season! Discover this week’s featured business below:

Tell me about Minky Couture, how did it start?

My journey began as a mother seeking to comfort my daughter during her hospital stay. She longed for a big, cute and cozy blanket—something like a baby blanket that simply wasn’t available. I reached out to my seamstress to create the first one and after making additional blankets for other patients, word spread. That’s how Minky Couture was born. What started as a single blanket has since blossomed into millions, bringing warmth and comfort to countless individuals.

What’s the biggest challenge of being a small business owner?

The biggest challenge of being a small business owner is managing growth. As our business expands, we require more space due to the size of our products, making sufficient warehouse capacity essential. We are immensely grateful for our loyal and dedicated employees, whose commitment fuels our success. Above all, we value our customers, whose support plays a crucial role in our ability to grow and thrive.

What’s the best aspect of being a small business?

The best aspect of being a small business is the incredible opportunities it brings, enhancing our credibility and opening doors to growth. When we moved into the Layton store, we gained instant recognition that led to new possibilities. I firmly believe that giving back to the community is essential for growth, allowing us to support those in need while strengthening our connections. By prioritizing community service, we can foster both our business and the well-being of those around us.

What’s one thing you wish customers knew more about when it comes to running a small business?

One thing I wish customers knew is how seriously we take their feedback, both positive and negative. When we hear consistent comments, we make changes accordingly. Our customers have more influence than they realize and we truly value their input. Additionally, our in-house customer service ensures that customers are speaking directly with a real person, allowing for more personalized support and engagement.
