Why should people support small businesses?

Supporting small businesses is essential because they play such a vital role in building and strengthening communities. Being part of the Holladay community has been especially rewarding, as it embraces a culture centered on shopping small, fostering local businesses and nurturing meaningful relationships. Utah, in particular, is a vibrant hub for small businesses, a melting pot where so many dreams take root and grow. We are deeply grateful to have transformed our passion project into a thriving business in the community where we were born and raised. Shopping small not only supports families like ours but also fuels creativity, drives local innovation and helps sustain a thriving community.

What’s the biggest challenge that comes with being a small business?

One of the biggest challenges of running a small business is staying ahead of trends and predicting what will be popular and successful months in advance. We’re constantly preparing for upcoming holiday seasons, working to anticipate market demands and striving to remain innovative while maintaining our reputation as a trailblazer in the industry. Balancing this forward-thinking mindset with staying humble, grounded and kind can be both a challenge and a rewarding part of the journey.

What’s the best opportunity that comes with being a small business?

One of the greatest rewards of owning a small business is the opportunity to meet incredible people — whether it’s fellow business owners, customers from across the country or local families. Our store has become a place of joy and connection for so many, and it’s been both humbling and beautiful to witness moments of community support, like when people come together after experiencing personal loss. As a family-oriented business, we take pride in fostering an environment where people can bond, find comfort and share meaningful experiences.

What’s one thing you wish customers knew more about when it comes to running a small business?

We wish our customers fully understood the dedication and sacrifice that goes into making Knot + Spool what it is today. Behind the scenes, there are long hours spent crafting and creating, often at the expense of family events and not being able to participate in all the activities for our kids. We pour so much time and energy into ensuring every detail is perfect, making the store a magical place for everyone who walks through the door. While balancing it all can be challenging, the rewards are immeasurable. Seeing how much this store means to families and the local community makes every sacrifice worthwhile. It’s a reminder that the heart of what we do is all about creating meaningful experiences and connections, and that makes the hard work truly fulfilling.

About Knot + Spool

Since December 2015, Knot + Spool has been a beloved part of the community, operating a charming storefront that began in a cozy location in Holladay. The journey started in 2010 when co-owner Missy and her daughter Madeline began crafting wreaths in their attic to help Madeline save for a humanitarian trip. Their creations were such a hit that their small hobby grew into a thriving business. Today, Knot + Spool is celebrated for offering one of the largest and most unique ribbon selections, making it a go-to spot for crafters. The shop also features handmade gifts, trinkets and beautifully curated seasonal displays, creating a delightful experience for every visitor. With its warm and welcoming atmosphere, Knot + Spool truly has something for everyone to enjoy!
