Hatch Foundation Honors Senator John Thune as 2024 Titan of Public Service

The Orrin G. Hatch Foundation held its Titan of Public Service Award gala this evening, recognizing the achievements and contributions of Senate Republican Whip John Thune. The annual event honors individuals who exemplify the values of service, civility, and bipartisanship, which were the hallmarks of Senator Hatch’s public service. This year’s gala continues the tradition of recognizing distinguished public servants, following in the footsteps of last year’s honorees, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao.

Senator Thune, a close friend and longtime colleague of Senator Hatch, has been a cornerstone of the Senate, consistently working to pass meaningful legislation that crosses partisan divides. From his senior membership on the Senate Commerce Committee to leading on issues ranging from tax reform to telecommunications, Senator Thune has demonstrated an ability to get things done for the American people.

“Senator Thune embodies the very best of what it means to be a public servant. At a time of nonstop polarization and partisan infighting, he is widely recognized as a level-headed leader who focuses on getting points on the board, not scoring media hits. We are proud to honor Senator Thune with this year’s Titan of Public Service Award,” said Matt Sandgren, Executive Director of the Orrin G. Hatch Foundation.

On receiving the award, Senator Thune said, “Orrin Hatch was a giant in the Senate—a man of principle and a model of civility. I am deeply honored to receive this award from a foundation that continues to carry forward his legacy. Now, it is more important than ever that we work together to serve the American people and strengthen our nation.

The evening featured remarks from former Senator Gordon Smith, who said, “The Orrin G. Hatch Foundation continues to demonstrate an unparalleled ability to bring together leaders from across the political spectrum. Tonight’s event is a testament to their powerful convening ability and commitment to promoting public service and civility in public life.

Martin B. Gold, a board member of the Hatch Foundation and a respected authority on Senate rules and procedures, shared his thoughts on the evening’s honoree. “Senator Thune’s career reflects the essence of what Senator Hatch stood for—integrity, determination, and a genuine commitment to the Senate as an institution. It has been an honor to witness his dedication to the principles that guided Senator Hatch throughout his life.

The Orrin G. Hatch Foundation remains committed to promoting the values of public service and bipartisan cooperation and looks forward to continuing this tradition of honoring those who exemplify the spirit of public service in the years to come.
