Summer has a way of making us pause and take stock.
Maybe it’s the longer days, the sunshine or simply the reminder that growth doesn’t happen overnight. Whatever the reason, this season always gets me thinking about the people who help us grow, and for many women, that growth is fueled by other women.
We’ve all heard the phrase “women supporting women,” but what does that actually look like?
In my experience, it’s rarely a grand gesture. More often, it’s an introduction over coffee. A recommendation for an opportunity. A quick phone call offering advice. A text message before a big presentation that simply says, “You’ve got this.”
Small moments. Lasting impact.
One of my favorite parts of working in media is getting to meet people I otherwise never would have crossed paths with. In any given week, I might sit down with a business owner who built her company from scratch, an executive leading a growing team, a nonprofit leader making a difference in her community or an entrepreneur taking a chance on a new idea.
Every woman has a different story. But after countless conversations, I’ve started to notice a common thread. When I ask women about their journey, they rarely start by talking about themselves. Instead, they talk about other people.
The mentor who shared her wisdom. The colleague who opened a door. The friend who provided encouragement during a difficult season. The business connection who became a trusted advisor. The woman who pulled up an extra chair and said, “Come sit with us.”
No one got there alone.
We often celebrate the individual achievement — the promotion, the growing business, the award, the accomplishment. But behind those milestones are usually dozens of conversations, relationships and moments of support that helped make them possible.
Success may have one name attached to it, but it’s often built by a community.
The Business Women’s Forum brings that idea to life.
While the luncheons are filled with valuable discussions on leadership, communication, negotiation, professional growth and business strategy, some of the greatest value comes from the connections formed around the conversation itself.
They happen while introducing yourself to someone new.
While sharing a challenge and realizing someone else has been through it too.
While exchanging ideas over lunch.
While discovering that the person sitting next to you may become a future client, mentor, collaborator or friend.
Those connections matter more than we sometimes realize.
In business, we often talk about growth in terms of revenue, promotions and opportunities. Yet some of the most important growth happens through relationships. The right conversation can shift your perspective. The right introduction can open a door. The right encouragement can give someone the confidence to take the next step.
I’ve seen it happen over and over again.
One conversation can spark a partnership.
One introduction can lead to a new client.
One piece of advice can build confidence that lasts for years.
And perhaps that’s the real meaning behind “women supporting women.” It’s not a slogan or a social media hashtag. It’s showing up. It’s sharing what you’ve learned. It’s celebrating someone else’s success without comparison. It’s creating space for others to grow alongside you.
As summer encourages us to slow down just enough to reflect, I’m reminded how grateful I am for the women who have supported me throughout my own career and for the opportunity to meet so many women doing the same for others.
Because at the end of the day, the stories that stay with me aren’t just about successful women.
They’re about the women who helped make that success possible.
