President’s Message: Empowering the Leaders of Tomorrow

It is no surprise that I am always thinking about the future of our economy. The choices we make now do impact the future. But beyond the businesses we build, the economic growth we pursue and the partnerships we nurture, there is a fundamental truth that the strength of our future lies in the hands of the next generation. It isn’t enough to solely prepare our youth for the workforce; we must also prepare them to be engaged, informed citizens. This is why fostering a deeper understanding of civics is so vital.

Civic education isn’t just about recalling historical facts or memorizing the branches of government — it’s about cultivating a sense of responsibility, participation and leadership. When people, especially young people, not only grasp how our systems function but can also recognize their power to affect change, they become the driving force for a brighter future.

This belief is why initiatives like the National Civics Bee® hold such importance. We’re thrilled to host the National Civics Bee® Utah State Finals this summer and see young minds of Utah discuss critical issues and develop innovative solutions. These middle schoolers will become business owners, public servants, educators, and changemakers, so by encouraging them to think critically about their communities and explore solutions to real-world challenges, we’re not just hosting a competition; we’re empowering the leaders of tomorrow.

The spirit of the National Civics Bee reminds us that education and engagement are lifelong pursuits. For students, it sparks curiosity and confidence, and it serves as a reminder to all of us of the power of collaboration, dialogue, and action. When young minds imagine better communities and share their voices, we see the promise of what’s to come.

Strong businesses rely on strong communities, and strong communities rely on individuals who are informed, empathetic and engaged. So, we need your help to make this vision a reality. Encourage the talented middle school students in your life to apply for the National Civics Bee® by February 4, and let them take their first step toward shaping a brighter future. Or consider supporting this important initiative by becoming a sponsor of the Utah State Finals.

Together, we can inspire, empower and celebrate the leaders of tomorrow.
