State of Good: Supporting Young Minds, Strengthening Our Community

As a nonprofit and program of the Salt Lake Chamber Foundation, Utah Community Builders recognizes a business each month that is making a meaningful impact in its community. This initiative aligns with their mission to activate the Utah business community to address pressing community issues that strengthen Utah’s workforce.

As the leading experts in infant and early childhood mental health, The Children’s Center Utah is transforming lives in our community. Since its founding in 1962 by Dr. Agi Plenk seeking better mental health care for young children, the organization has provided comprehensive, high-quality services to support the emotional well-being of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their families.

Offering a range of treatment options tailored to each child’s needs, The Children’s Center Utah provides outpatient therapy for children and families, both in-person and online and a Therapeutic Preschool Program. They also offer free webinars, coaching training sessions and online resources to educate providers and families on the importance of early mental health intervention. Their dedicated team trains professionals statewide — including childcare providers, pediatricians and licensed mental health specialists — ensuring children receive the support they need as early as possible.

“One of the most important aspects of our work is expanding training and education for providers,” said President and CEO Rebecca Dutson. “Strengthening the infant and early childhood mental health workforce is one way in which The Children’s Center Utah collaborate with dozens of community partners to support high-quality mental health care for children, ensuring we remove barriers for families.”

Mental health concerns begin early, yet many don’t realize that infants, toddlers and preschoolers can experience trauma, anxiety and emotional struggles. “Addressing concerns early with their families provides tools to manage big emotions, helping children thrive and families stay in the workforce,” Dutson explained. Research shows untreated childhood trauma can have lifelong consequences, including lower rates of high school graduation, college attendance and employment, as well as higher rates of poverty, homelessness and involvement in the criminal justice system.

The Children’s Center Utah plays a vital role in supporting the community, and in turn, relies on community support to continue its mission. Donations help fund essential programs and initiatives, such as a Family Store during the holidays, while businesses and community groups can participate in hands-on service projects, like assembling worry boxes used in therapy sessions. The organization also welcomes financial contributions, items from its Amazon wish list and donations of new or gently used clothing, toys, books and blankets. For those interested in seeing their impact firsthand, center tours are available.
