The Salt Lake Chamber and Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute announced today that Dr. Peter Cressy, a former rear admiral and university president, and director of the George Washington Leadership Institute will give the keynote address at the 2024 Utah Economic Outlook & Public Policy Summit, the state’s premier economic forecasting and public policy event attended by policy and academic thought leaders from across the state.

Cressy will provide a thought-provoking keynote address entitled “Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Churchill: A Strategic Approach to Leading in Times of Crisis.” In this presentation, Cressy will draw insightful parallels between four iconic leaders and their strategic approaches to crisis management. He will highlight the relevance of their leadership styles in the context of contemporary challenges such as the economic situation and the Ukrainian war.

“Understanding the lessons learned by past historical leaders is essential for addressing the contemporary complex challenges of our time,” said Derek Miller, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber. “Dr. Cressy’s expertise will not only provide leaders the opportunity to reflect on the relevance of the leadership strategies of iconic figures in history, but also underscore the importance of the democratic process and proactive engagement during the legislative session. We look forward to hearing how we can collectively draw upon these lessons for the betterment of our community.”

Peter Cressy, Ed.D., RADM (Ret.), is the Director of Executive Leadership Programs at the George Washington Leadership Institute. He served 28 years in the United States Navy in command and senior staff positions, followed by 8 years in higher education as a college president and university chancellor, where he was also a tenured professor of management. He later served 16 years as the President and CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council trade association.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Peter Cressy to Utah and look forward to his insights into these four historical figures,” said Natalie Gochnour, Director of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute. “The lessons gained from their approaches to crisis management will serve our leaders as they address pressing economic uncertainty, both in Utah and around the world.”
